Blue stain fungi

These fungi develop in wood with very high humidity, above 30%. These fungi change the colour of the wood (from blue to black) but not its mechanical properties. There are around 250 different types of blue stain fungi. The best-known species are Ceratocystis (from the Ascomycetes group), Aureobasidium, Alternaria and Clasoporium (from the Deuteromycetes group).

To prevent the development of these fungi, preventive treatments on healthy wood after sawing. The blue staining already present before treatment is not reversible.

Wood-decay fungus

Fungi are classified according to the damage they cause. The best known are :

– Fibrous rot is caused mainly by two fungi:

  • Coriolus versicolor
  • Phellinus megaloporus

– Soft rot caused by the fungus

  • Chaetonium globosum

– Cubic rot is caused mainly by two fungi:

  • Serpula lacrymens
  • Lenzites separia

Wood materials exposed to these biological risks lose their mechanical and physical properties, and therefore their durability, more or less quickly.
