The various resins used in manufacturing and their uses

Industrial paint
27.10.2023

Specialists in the production of alkyd resins, Group Berkem takes into account your core business and provides you with options designed to optimise the performance and value of your products. Although, these days, alkyd resin is particularly sought after by professionals in the construction and timber sectors, the manufacturing sector is not being neglected.

Thanks to their specialist knowledge, Groupe Berkem now offers a wide range of binders, specially formulated to provide demanding physical, chemical and environmental protection.

Would you like to see more information on the various ranges available from Groupe Berkem and their benefits? Find out all you need to know in this article.

The benefits of alkyd resin in the manufacturing sector

Known as “glycerophthalic resin”, alkyd resin is obtained by combining alcohol (Al) and fatty acids (cid). Thanks to its unique formulation, alkyd resin is especially popular with professionals in the manufacturing sector because of:

  • the best possible compromise between durability and flexibility: alkyd resin is compatible with most materials, provided they have been prepared properly beforehand. This means alkyd resin can be used both as a binder for primers and for touch-up and top coats.
  • ease of application: whether applied with a spray gun or a brush, the paint produced with alkyd resin offers a tight, properly finished result, without leaving any streaks.
  • their composition, more environmentally friendly and less toxic. This is because alkyds have a higher renewables content and do not require the use of biocides.

Which alkyd resins should be used in the formulation of your industrial paints?

Established in the heart of the South-West of France for more than 6 decades, Group Berkem is one of the original French suppliers of glycerophthalic paint manufacturers. Thanks to its expertise, Groupe Berkem  is now able to produce alkyd resins specifically adapted to the technical requirements of industrial paint.

Lixoglyp, the classic alkyds

The alkyd resins in the Lixoglyp range are mainly used by professionals in the sector as a binder for touch-up and top coats for car bodies and agricultural machinery.
Besides offering fast drying, this range of alkyd resins (long or medium oil) delivers exceptional technical performance. Whether adhesion, hardness, mechanical, chemical or UV resistance, these products promise to be highly effective on a wide range of surfaces.

Lixaqua, water-based alkyds

As the name suggests, the water-based alkyds in the Lixaqua range are resins which can be diluted with water. These are obtained following neutralisation with a base, in particular an amine derivative.

Easy to apply, this technology is ideal when used for industrial finishes.

Lixothan, urethane oils and alkyds

The Lixothan range offers improved paint drying time and mechanical strength owing to the polyurethane modification of alkyd resins.
This modification contributes to the formulation of primer paint with a gloss or satin finish.

Lixothix, thixotropic alkyds

The thixotropic alkyds in the Lixothix range are mainly used for cutting with medium and long oil alkyds.

Lixopox, epoxy esters

In general, epoxy esters from the Lixepox range are used for primer and anti-corrosion finishes. Hence why these products demonstrate good chemical resistance and superior strength.

As in the construction and timber sectors, there are many applications for alkyd resin in the manufacturing sector. It can be used as a binder for primer, as well as for touch-up and top coat paints.
