Why use alkyd resins in the manufacturing sector ?

Industrial paint
27.10.2023

Obtained by combining alcohol (AI) and fatty acids (cid), alkyd resins are now used widely in industrial applications as a binder for paint and varnish. They are particularly valued by professionals in this sector because of their brightness, hardness and anti-corrosion protection.

Curious to know more about the value of alkyd resin in the manufacturing sector? Find out now all you need to know about its applications and benefits.

Alkyd resin: specification and benefits

Alkyd resin – also known as glycerophthalic resin “Today, alkyd resin – also known as glycerophthalic resin – is used in the construction, timber and manufacturing sectors as a binder in paint, varnish and wood products. Its unique formulation means alkyd resin is considered a high-performance product because of:

  • Ease of use: besides being easy to apply, alkyd resin delivers excellent, streak-free  results.
  • Lower toxicity: unlike other binders on the market, alkyds contain higher levels of renewables and no biocides. They are therefore less toxic and more environmentally friendly.
  • Durability and flexibility: since it is compatible with most materials and substrates, alkyd resin can be used both indoors and out.

Industrial applications: why use alkyd resin?

For more than 60 years, Group Berkem has been committed to the development of alkyd resins specifically adapted to the technical requirements of industrial paints. Consequently, a wide range of binders has been formulated to deliver a high degree of physical, chemical and environmental protection.

The broad scope of the Lixoglyp, Lixothix ,Lixothan, Lixepox, Lixophen and Lixaqua ranges offers a host of options when formulating industrial paint :

  • Lixoglyp: Besides being fast-drying, this type of alkyd resin delivers exceptional technical performance: adhesion, hardness, and also mechanical, chemical and UV resistance, etc. This range is mainly used as a binder for retouching and top coats for car bodies and agricultural machinery.
  • Lixothix: Thixotropic alkyd for cutting with medium and long oil alkyds.
  • Lixothan: Polyurethane-modified alkyd resin is used to produce primer with a satin sheen finish and excellent chemical and mechanical resistance.
  • Lixepox: This epoxy ester is used for primer and anti-corrosion finishes.
  • Lixophen: Alkyd resin modified with linseed oil, tung oil and phenols.
  • Lixaqua: This water-soluble alkyd resin can be formulated after neutralisation for industrial finishes.

Alkyd resin can be used for many purposes in the manufacturing sector. Owing to its many advantages (strength, adhesion, hardness, finish), it is a popular alternative in the industry.
